Technical Visit to Itaipu DAM - I:
Geology and Geotechnics. Visit to Itaipu Hydroeletric Power Plant with emphasis on the geological and geotechnical problems of the dam construction, dam monitoring and instrumentation. (estimated time 3 hours).

Technical Visit to Itaipu DAM - II:
Hydrology. Visit to Itaipu Hydroeletric Power Plant with emphasis on the hydrological problems of the Paraná river, monitoring of river flow and management of flood control (estimated time 3 hours).

Field Trips
Field Trip 1: Impact Craters in Basalts
Date: August, 14-15 , Saturday and Sunday
Basaltic impact craters are rare on Earth (although common in other solid planetary bodies). We will visit two impact craters: Vargeão and Vista Alegre, in Paraná and Santa Catarina states, with diameters of 13 and 9.5 km, respectively. This will provide a first-hand insight of the shock deformation features in basalt, especially for participants of the session "Impact Cratering on Solid Planets - Shocks on Basalt".
The sites are only a few hours from Iguassu.
This 2-day field trip is planned as a post-conference activity.
Field Trip2: Biogeosciences LBA Project, Manaus
Pre-congress field trip (August 4th – 8th) to LBA (Large Biosphere-Atmosphere Experiment in the Amazon) experiment site and visit to Manaus. Limit – 24 people.
August 4 (Wednesday): Participants arrive in Manaus, transfer to Hotel Holiday Inn Manaus Hotel. ADD HOTEL WEB SITE? No activities scheduled in evening.
August 5 (Thursday): Transfer from Hotel to ZF2 (LBA field experiment site in the Amazon jungle), about 2 hours drive in 4x4 vehicles. Visit INPA reserve and LBA towers K34 and Km14 with meteorological instruments. Night at the ZF2 lodging.
August 6 (Friday): Transfer in 4x4 vehicles from ZF2 to Ducke Park, another LBA site with Botanical Garden and tower, in Manaus.
Lunch in typical local restaurant (regional fish) (not included in the cost).
Visit to INPA’s Science Park (Bosque da Ciência) where peixes-boi, ariranhas and alligators can be seen. Lecture about biodiversity by INPA scientist. Back to Hotel.
August 7 (Saturday): Free.
Suggestion of boat tour to Amazon/Rio Negro “meeting of the waters” (not included in the cost).
August 8 (Sunday): transfer from Hotel to airport and trip to Iguassu Foz.
Included meals:
Breakfast every day at the Hotel and at INPA’s ZF2 lodging.
Lunch and dinner on the Thursday at ZF2.
Recommendations:
Yellow fever shot (vaccine). Mosquito repellent, sun screaning, water bottle. Bathing suit and towel (for river swimming at ZF2). Long sleeve shirts, cap and walking boots.
